Are You Looking Into an Unfamiliar Investment or Business Proposition and Want To Investigate Before You Invest? Do Your ‘Due Diligence’ Before You Hand Over Your Cash
Most of us grew up hearing the old cliché “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Never is that more true than in the world of finance and investment. That saying takes me back a few years ago when my partner was working on a case providing services to the leader of the investment group. The pool of investors were getting ready to put in about 12 million dollars into an obscure, but profitable business venture with a company in the Chicago area. To make a long story short, the group of investors had the foresight to hire some professionals to check out the background on the business and individuals they were about to hand all this money over to. As it turns out, this “company” was working out of some little studio apartment with a fax machine, and very little else..except for the knowledge on how to scam people.
Unfortunately there are scoundrels out there who have no conscience about separating people and businesses from their hard earned money. Many of these scum have been doing a while, and are very slick at it. The really good ones have cheated people out of hundreds of thousands, even millions, and disappear without a trace (or so it seems).
The lure of great returns on business and investment opportunities have a way of attracting even the most acute of investors. Even sophisticated, successful businesspeople can get caught up in the thrill and not be as careful as they should. One should never go into a large business proposition without doing their due diligence.
In the investigative arena, due diligence is to simply check everything out. Are the principals who they say they are? That’s the first red flag, is if you can’t verify their identity? Are they really who they say they are? What is their background in business and investment projects? Have they been bankrupt? Do they have a trail of scammed people behind them from other projects? A little foresight on this before you invest can save a lot of loss and heartache. Remember, nobody’s immune from falling victim to a scam, it happens to the best of us.
So, how can you avoid all this trouble? First of all, always be wary of financial dealings with someone you don’t know. You don’t want to be paranoid, of course, but you should be careful and always keep a hand on your pocketbook.
As worn out as this phrase is, if it sounds too good to be true, there’s a very good chance that it is. This is one old adage that I’ve personally seen come true time and time again.
